What Do Personal Injury Lawyers Do?

There are many perceptions of a personal injury lawyer, but what’s the truth?

Personal injury attorneys are counselors and advocates for people who have been injured in an accident. Whether it is a slip and fall, trip and fall, work related, car, motorcycle, recreational or other accident, our job is to represent the rights of the injured victim and their family, never the insurance company.

So, why do personal injury attorneys have such a bad reputation in our society and why are we so often seen as greedy ambulance chasers?

Whether the reason for the negative image is television, commercials, negative and false insurance company propaganda or the few bad apples out there, the stereotypes are damaging to lawyers, our legal system and society. The legal system and its lawyers are what people should be able to trust in their time of need. It is their last avenue for relief when wrongdoers (whether private parties or government) refuse to accept responsibly for their negligent acts.

It is not what you hear, but truth be told, the goal of the vast majority of personal injury lawyers is to help people (not themselves) in their time of need.

Injury attorneys not only help victims and their families. The more important consequence of their work is a safer environment for all of us, our children, mothers, fathers and friends. We live in a society governed by laws. The laws must be enforced or they will never be obeyed.

Wrongdoers must know that if they cause harm to another, they will be held financially responsible for the damages. If this were not the case—laws not enforced and wrongdoers with no responsibility for harm they cause, the result would be complete anarchy. However, that is NOT the case in the United States. Laws are enforced by lawyers.

Wrongdoers are made to answer for the harm they cause by lawyers. People and corporations are constantly reminded that they need to be mindful and concerned about what can happen to them if they do not behave in a reasonable manner. Safety laws and regulations that are currently in place are largely the result of injury attorneys, enacted in response to negligent behavior. These laws provide a standard which intends to keep the public healthy and safe.

Examples:

– Cars are made safer because of the laws in the US that hold car manufacturers liable for defective products;

– Childrens’ clothes are non-flammable due to the same safety laws;

– Electronics do not explode and cause harm, due to the testing standards and the threats of responsibility for harm that would surely result;

– Retail stores are mindful of their premises and make every attempt to keep them clean and safe for their customers;

– Drivers are careful while on the roads, fearful of the financial consequences of negligent driving.

These are only a few of the hundreds of examples that the laws and lawyers make in our lives everyday. Without the same, we would likely not make it out of our homes in the morning without the risk of injury.

We certainly like to believe that no one wants to injure another, but, without the promise (threat) of being held financially (and possibly criminally) responsible for harm caused to another, the threshold of concern would certainly be much lower.
